Before I start posting beach pictures, I want to share about our fun in the mountains last month! Traditionally we spend the 4th of July with Brent’s family. We used to always gather down at the beach but then my MIL was hit by a rogue firework which traumatized us all enough to move the celebration to their house on the river. So for the last several years we’ve gathered on the dock for the three B’s of being a Cobb: barbecue, boat rides and beer. (Check out last year here and 2011 here.)
This year my super generous in-laws decided to mix it up a bit by treating us to a weekend together in the mountains. We were all set for some hiking, biking, tubing, and swimming. The bikes were loaded, the suits were packed and the kids were on cloud nine about adventuring with their cousins. And then…
it rained.
and rained.
and rained.
And our only two consolations were that 1) we were together and 2) it was raining cats and dogs everywhere else we might have gone too (river? check. home? check. beach? check. check.)
So instead we hunkered down and did what all rained in vacationers do…
We made bracelets.
Thanks to the thoughtfulness and prior planning of the kiddos’ awesome Aunt Parmy who never misses an opportunity to make these kids smile.
And when we had a short break in the rain we dashed outside to celebrate sweet Nate’s 4th birthday. It was a Ninjago party and each of the kids received their own glow in the dark t-shirts. (Again with the awesome Aunt Parmy.) Side note: Sarah and Ephraim are now obsessed with “charging” their shirts. Cutest thing I’ve ever seen.
Parmy handcrafted a Ninjago pinata and the kiddos went to town.
Nate was in Ninja heaven.
And I’d like to point out that I earned some awesome aunt points as well by donating my sleep mask for the pinata cause. I’m super selfless like that. I don’t think homemade pinatas, glow in the dark t-shirts and super thoughtful goodies can come close to competing with that level of awesome, do you?
Some participants adhered to the wearing of the sleep ninja mask better than others…
Case in point.
Papa watched from afar, cheering his baby ninjas on…
And then Uncle Tory got tricky with the rope…
But even that couldn’t stop our warriors.
Appropriately, the birthday boy began the demise of the two headed…Ninjago thingy?
And then B-Ro finished him off,
And as everyone thanked Aunt Parmy profusely for all of the goodies, he was quick to point out that all the cousins should also be thanking him since he was the one that broke it open.
I have no idea where he gets that need for constant affirmation and credit. Ahem.
After the bounty was gathered we headed inside for cake and (more) goodies. Somehow all of the party attendees seemed to end up with just as much loot as Natey-Ball did.
One word for this cake…
wow.
Happy Fourth Birthday Nate! Celebrating you on a rainy day in a cozy cabin was the perfect way to spend a holiday.
