ten on tuesday: home edition

I love home. A house is one thing but a home is something completely different. Growing up our family moved all over the world but each place we lived felt like home to me. The moment the boxes arrived my mom and dad set to work rebuilding our sense of home and comfort. And it always worked. Even now as an adult I continue to feel a deep sense of belonging when I’m at each of my parents’ homes. They’re just set up to invite you in and make you want to curl up with a cup of something warm or a glass of something iced and stay a while. I want our home to be that way too. Whenever I choose something new I always try to consider if it makes our home more comfortable, warm, or inviting.  I want my home to say “come in! you’ll love it here!”…and I hope one day my children will say that too.

I am certainly not a decorator or a style hound but I do love spinning our little cocoon. Thought I’d share a few bits and pieces of it with the blog today since I’ve been loving it especially much lately.

1. My favorite spot in the house these days. A vintage leather chair I picked up at an antique store in N’ville over my mom’s birthday weekend…pillow from Pottery Barn…wall collage from Etsy seller suzannaanna

79

2. A close up…the red album was a clearance goodie from PB several years ago. It says “No one ever takes a picture of something that they want to forget”. Brent and I had big plans of taking pictures of all the crazy things we see on the side of the road. You know, misspelled signs, crazy church marquees, that sort of thing. Of course, we never did it so instead it’s filled with good ol’ family snapshots. At least it’s not empty like it was up until last week!
77

3. Little bits of goodness in our family room. We have two living spaces – one on either side of this wall – and I end up calling both of them the “living room”. If I tell Sarah that something is in the “living room” she’ll look at me in her exasperated three year old fashion and say, “which living room?”. So I’ve started trying to call them the “yellow room” and the “blue room”. But then I feel like I live in the White House.

78

4. One of my favorite views – standing in the “yellow room” into two other rooms full of color.

76

5. Where I spend a large chunk of my time. 50% maybe? A lot.

75

6. Close up of my little hanging friends. I found those at Ikea last spring on a 30-minutes-till-closing-time shopping spree in Orlando with Amy. My original plan was to hang three in this space but I ran out of hardware. It’s just as well since it gives Heather, Dawn, Wes, and other neighborhood ramblers a peek hole to talk through!

74

7. The “retreat”. It’s part of our bedroom and the site of much PBS/Comedy Central watching.

73

8. I was called out a few weeks back for never showing any pictures of the orange band of paint in our kitchen’s tray ceiling. So here you go. I love the punch it adds.

72

9. And I just recently discovered that these three chincy little white vases (also acquired during our Ikea spree) are perfect for holding Sarah’s bazillion watercolor brushes. And paper flowers made at school.

71

10. And, finally, our hallway. Letters purchase from etsy sellers KristinemaysKuber and Poshdots.

Welcome to our home!!!

(Anyone else want to play? I would LOVE to see what you guys have going on! I’m nosy like )

Oh my gosh! I adore those hanging thingies in your kitchen! I wish we had Ikea around here. And it was cool to see a good view of where you shoot and where your windows are. Thanks for sharing!

KellyApril 21, 2009 - 1:20 pm

THANK YOU! I’m nosy too and LOVE looking at everyone’s homes. After three years in our house I still feel like kids playing house. We don’t have any style and I feel like we just throw stuff up on the walls. I’m not in love with any of our decor… I want to change it all 🙂

Thanks for posting the esty sellers for the family letters. I’ve been searching your site for them recently without luck.

Your house does provide that “come in, take your shoes off and stay a while” vibe.
Love your choices of color. I think I’m afraid of color…love color, but always afraid I’ll hate it once it’s on the walls.
Anyway, lovely home!

love this post! i will definitely play…in the near future…something about spring, cause i have had the same sentiment about our home lately. i just love it. stay tuned! and what a good idea for the watercolor brushes, of which we also seem to have a TON!

McGeeApril 21, 2009 - 2:56 pm

I will play – but I need to clean the house first!

Tina RApril 21, 2009 - 4:38 pm

Love it all! I reeeally need some inspiration…we don’t have much on our walls after 6.5 months of being in our new house. I’m ready to make it “home” …Can’t wait to see what others share too!

I love seeing pictures of peoples homes! Thanks for sharing! You’ve down a beautiful job, and such great ideas!

MarciApril 21, 2009 - 6:12 pm

Beautiful home. You have amazing light and it totally has the come in and stay a while feel. Definitely a family friendly home and I love all the little details. I’d love to share ours but it’s a toys r us nightmare. We have a 2 story house so that means 90% of the toys are downstairs and bedrooms are upstairs. I’m wishing we would have gotten a ranch so that my 3 year old could have a lot of her toys in her room and still play without me worrying about her being upstairs by herself.

nickiApril 21, 2009 - 6:25 pm

I love every square inch of it…the colors, the detail and especially the come in and stay a while feel :-).
I wish I had more walls, does that make sense?
We have a very open house and more and more I am wishing we had more separated rooms.
Love it, I want to see more!!! 🙂

As soon as I saw those hanging frames I thought about that shopping trip! I need to put mine to good use. . . maybe in the nursery! I also love the kitchen colors. . . that orange is so you. What are the framed pictures in your Family arrangement? The tree and then the dots. . . looks like the tree is Sarah’s footprint for the trunk? Was it a school project?

What a beautiful, welcoming, warm home … thanks for sharing. I love being nosy and if I blogged, would invite you to view my space too. 🙂 It’s so fun what you can learn from seeing how people decorate their homes.

Hi Erin. I love your place!! Both your home and your blog 🙂 I’m a loooong time lurker and you’ve totally inspired me to start my own blog and become a bit more serious about photography. The blog part has been a success, the photography, well, that consists of me using my fancy camera in auto mode **gasp**. Just a quick question for you – all of a sudden when I visit your blog I can’t see the top of your first post because your drop down menus are covering it up. Any idea why that would be?? Thanks for sharing your home with us!

I think your home fits the description “come on in, you’ll love it here”. I think anyone would love visiting. For your trip to Dayton, two activities you might want to add to your schedule – a trip to Ikea (in between Dayton and Cincinnati, about 40ish minutes from base) and a trip to the Pottery Barn/William Sonoma outlet about 30ish minutes from base!

nickiApril 22, 2009 - 11:38 am

In regards to Jenny’s comments…I love both places and know exactly where they are 🙂 wink wink

erinApril 22, 2009 - 11:43 am

Thanks for the comments you guys! I can’t wait to see some of your homes!

Jenny, it’s SO funny that you mention that b/c I’m already planning to load the kids up and haul them to the PB outlet…it’s so amazing! I had NO IDEA though that there was an Ikea there now. They must have built that since I left. I’m definitely adding that to the list. Now if I can just convince Brent that we need to take our truck instead of our little car…

=)
