that thing you do.

Post-nap yesterday I decided to let B-Ro snuggle up with his sister for a few minutes of PBS. Always one for sitting on a couch he was very much about this idea. I headed on my merry way hoping to catch a few more minutes of mama time before the busy afternoon/evening began. When I walked back in to check on them a few minutes later, I found this…

A little closer…

And finally, the picture I never even knew I wanted…but that I’m so glad I have. Just my two kiddos – doin’ those things they do.  The Backwards Ring Finger Sucker and the RaeRae Sniffer.

Kids are weird, huh? I’d love to hear about the things your little weirdos do. =)

Mazie used to suck her right first finger and twirl her hair with her left hand. She also had rae rae in her crib all the time. Jamie used to (just recently stopped) suck her left thumb and twirl her hair with her right hand. She also had to have pooh bear in her crib. Jacob nursed. I was his pacifier for a long time. Then he found out that he likes soft things. He takes the corners of blankets (mostly crocheted) or a soft cloth and rubs it around his lips. Kind of like Sarah sniffing her rae rae. He also has to have his “dino” and “all gator” in his bed. Yes, I agree, kids are weird. But, for some reason, these things calm them down.

i thought raerae bit the dust….glad she’s back 😉

teagan loves on everything, put it up to his ear and saws “awwwww” as in “awwww that’s so cute”. he does not discriminate…..his favorite doggie, his blankie, a toy spoon 😉

I love that last picture! How you got it without them even flinching, I’ll never know! My niece, Lindsey (who is now almost 19!), used to have a “nose ninny” (their word for the pacifier). She would pluck a fuzz ball off a blanket, put it on the end of the nose ninny, and then rub the nose ninny on her nose to tickle the end of her nose with the fuzzy to put herself to sleep. God forbid you couldn’t find the nose ninny!

P.S. I was reading your blog last night, and I was scrolling through some old posts when I came across that picture of you and B-Ro cuddled up in the chair. My boyfriend had been looking over my shoulder and said “cute” as I scrolled past the pictures of the kids, but when I got to THAT picture of you and B-Ro, he said, “Now, SHE’S cute!” So there you go! You upstage even your cutie kids!

I love those!! That’s one of those pics you will look back on in 5 or 10 years and love it because you will have forgotten that they even did that! My three year old has a blankie and has sucked on the tag since she got it around 9 or 10 months. I have sewn the tag back on numerous times and although I wash the blanket regularly, the tag still stinks. My 10 month old has a bunny whose body is a blankie. When I give it to her, she searches for a certain corner of the blankie and chews on it. Whatever gets them to go to sleep!

MomMarch 24, 2009 - 9:26 am

I love these, Deed. This you wil cherish!

BeccaMarch 24, 2009 - 10:41 am

How cute! Also, how in the world did you get that last shot without them shifting positions or looking at you~amazing!
The cutest thing my little guy did when he was little and either needed to go down for a nap or had just woken up from one was he would twirl my hair~over and over. It seemed to calm him and he’d get this trance like look on his face. My husband and I will be shocked if he doesn’t marry a long haired lady someday:)

tara pollard pakostaMarch 24, 2009 - 10:41 am

i would blow that last one up HUGE! i love it! how precious!
my weirdo 9 year old sucked her nuk til she was almost 3.5 years old.
my 7.5 year old nursed til she was 3 years old! guess i was her source of addiction LOL>>>

SharonMarch 24, 2009 - 12:01 pm

Maggie sucks her right thumb and rubs MY hair on her face or twirls it if she’s nursing….
It’s odd. She used to have a bunny and she’d rub the bunny’s ears on her face, but found she likes my hair better.
AND if I’m not home she lays really high on Jeramys shoulder and pats his spiky hair.
Thats why you have to come out to NorCal soon! Its very hard to photograph Maggie and her hair/thumb thing myself!

The pictures of your two are priceless!

SamanthaMarch 24, 2009 - 12:06 pm

Love, love, love these. And love the pictures, too. 🙂

MomMarch 24, 2009 - 12:21 pm

Hey, just looked at these again and saw the other thing Sarah does — the one pant leg up, one pant leg down style! She’s a trendsetter, that one!

JenniferMarch 24, 2009 - 1:22 pm

Those pictures are priceless! Tyler use to suck his first 2 fingers and snuggle with his blankie – except he had to find the exact spot where the silky satin border was sewn together and the seam had come apart. And he only sucked his fingers if he had his blankie.

robinMarch 24, 2009 - 2:38 pm

b-ro sucks his ring finger? WAY. TOO. CUTE. and pi’bear sniffs bunny ears? LOVE it.

AmyMarch 24, 2009 - 3:30 pm

OMG! I LOVE those photos. I guess TV does have it’s perks. . . you get to capture beautiful moments like that! And you know that Hayden has his “suckers” and Bubby, but he doesn’t really do anything weird with them, per se.

SusiePSUMarch 24, 2009 - 6:00 pm

Molly used to stuff a cloth diaper down her sleeve and pull her arm out of the neck hole to go to sleep. Every shirt, top, and pajama had a neck that was stretched out, and all of her left arms were stretched out from the cloth diaper inside of it. It was pretty funny. I’ll have to check for a picture to blog it! Thanks for making me remember!!

erinMarch 24, 2009 - 6:45 pm

Wow, Susie. Now THAT’S weird. But, I would expect nothing less from a child of yours. 😉

ShannonMarch 25, 2009 - 5:50 am

My daughter has 2 cabbage patch premie babies that she received when she was a year old. They have a little tuft of silk hair on the top that she rubs between her fingers to go to sleep. 2 years later she still has the babies although she has rubbed the hair completely off except for a patch of fuzz. She still rubs it anyway. Stinkin cute…

The boy doesn’t have any quirky habits just yet, but I’m sure they are coming!

AmyJMarch 25, 2009 - 2:13 pm

I agree with your mom. These might be your favorite photos when they are all grown up! Sweet little sweeties 🙂

JoyMarch 25, 2009 - 5:00 pm

These are some of my favorite pictures of yours ever! They are just so real and just beautiful!

Charlie is such a touchy-feely baby — always has his pacy(blanket attached through the loop of the pacy) wrapped around him. But the funniest is that when I wear my hair curly, he wraps his fingers around the curls and holds on, but doesn’t really play with my hair when it is straight. And oh, of course, Monkey must be in the bed for him to sleep. He wraps himself around Monkey to sleep — hugs him like a long lost friend.

DeniseMarch 25, 2009 - 6:47 pm

Oh, what a sweet picture! I blame it on Facebook and being pregnant, but this is my first visit to the new blog. I have a photo like this where Josiah is playing with Jon’s hair. I’ll send to you via email because it’s just really sweet. Don’t you just love the intimacy our children share? So sweet and tender…

j.j.March 25, 2009 - 7:20 pm

oh this is why i’m practically obsessed with capturing fisher with his lovey. because there was no such thing for alla – it was just ME, so the idea that there’s a THING that he does and a THING that calms him and, i’ve always said, centers him, is just so amazing to me.

Jenn HuntonMarch 25, 2009 - 8:12 pm

Oh, Erin, these are so, so precious. I love the last one, I agree with whoever said they’d blow it up big. What honeys you have.

Hmm…weird kid things-let’s see. Kym (now 9) still can’t sleep without her cloud blanket. Tina (now 8) twirled her hair so tight, she practically cut off circulation in her fingers every night, and Josh (4 next week) chews the tail and backside of his lovey, “Bow” (golden retriever from IKEA), ALL THE TIME. Watching TV, playing video games, you name it-Bow’s back end is firmly clamped in his mouth. Oh, and when he was nursing, he couldn’t go to sleep without thrusting his hand down the front of my shirt. Now that’s weird.

shelbyMarch 26, 2009 - 2:15 pm

Anna has a thing with our ears. When she is tired she has to hold them, but when she is awake sometimes she just comes in the room to touch them and then walks away 🙂

TashaMarch 26, 2009 - 6:01 pm

How do I get pictures like these, I mean really!!!!

Daniel MendezMarch 28, 2009 - 7:51 pm

I love these pics.. but the last one is just soooo touching! Perhaps especially since my son sucks his thumb and my daughter is developing this thing with her puppy where she ‘rubs’ his ears against her nose… just like this picture looks 🙂 I do not yet have any photos of the rubbing… but if I could get something 10% close to this one I would be very happy! 🙂
Good on you!

Aunt LuMarch 28, 2009 - 10:03 pm

OMG…I love it!

ChristiMarch 30, 2009 - 11:44 am

I swear – is all the furniture in your house positioned for perfect candid picture taking?? Of course, your mad skills help, I guess. You are too good.
Nate is funny with his pacifiers – he is happiest when he has not 1, not 2, but 3 under his control: one for the mouth and a backup in each hand, just in case.
