For as long as I can remember Sarah has used the word kiwi. Except that she doesn’t use it to refer to the fruit. Or to a person from New Zealand. She was probably three when she first described to us that to her the word “kiwi” meant cozy.
We just went with it.
Her favorite days are rainy days when she can snuggle deep into a laundry basket (???) with a good book and a whole bedroom’s worth of linens. Her kiwi smile in these moments is just irresistible.
Lately though the word has taken on a more developed meaning. She tells me that kiwi describes the feeling of being warm, cozy, happy, and peaceful. It’s when no one is mad at you, everyone is safe, and the family is happily going about their own projects and ideas. I know the exact feeling she’s getting at. I’ll admit that sometimes it washes over me after half a glass of wine as I’m cooking dinner and my little fam is happy and healthy under my roof. It’s more the happy and healthy than it is the wine…but the wine definitely helps. 😉
I think our sweet Pi’bears might be on to something because I can’t think of another word in the English language that conveys that exact feeling.
Are you kiwi today?
It sure would make me kiwi to know that you are.
