birthday girl.

I think after six years of motherhood I may finally be getting the hang of birthdays. This was the first year that the passage of time didn’t literally take my breath away. It may have been the month long countdown, compliments of Pi’bears, that prepared my heart for 6, but I’d like to think it’s just years of practice. And the slow realization that time won’t take my babies away. They’ll always be mine. Sure, I’ll say goodbye to their old ways and mourn those sweet moments at times, but now I know how precious and wonderful every stage is. Everyday, a new blessing. A new sweet moment to look forward to.

So I say, welcome Six. Come on in and stay awhile.

Sarah woke up on her birthday morning to find her cousin Charlotte waiting for her. Talk about the perfect way to ring in a new number.

Then we headed to school with chocolate chip cookies in tow. For the last several years that has been Sarah’s birthday treat of choice. Although this year she specifically asked that I make them ahead. “I don’t like them fresh,” she said. My apologies to the rest of the class but the birthday girl gets what the birthday girl wants and if stale cookies are on her wish list, so be it.

I got to stick around for a bit while the class carried out their birthday ritual. They all formed a circle around Sarah, pretending to be the birthday cake.

And then the birthday girl got to choose her “candles”…

And blow them out. This was a hit as you can imagine.

Welcome to six, baby girl. It’s a magical age and you are a magical child.

Soak it in.

For me, once my kids get past five, their birthdays become less sad for me, and more about loving their big kid selves. Happy 6th Birthday Sarah! Where did you get her super cute birthday outfit? I love it!

Erin, what a sweet post. You honest to goodness made me cry. Thank you for the reminder to appreciate the time we’re in now. I love the last line “it’s a magical age and you are a magical child.” Just one of the billion reasons I’ve been following your blog all these years.
