“Lots of Love, Hugs, Kisses & Prayers…”

That was always my Granny’s sign off in every card she ever sent me. And she made good on each and every one of those promises, of that I’m sure.

This morning a caregiver in Granny’s assisted living facility could not wake her. She had passed peacefully in her sleep sometime during the night.

We are shocked and sad  for us, but rejoicing for Granny.

As a child my Granny had a license plate that read: “Let me tell you about my grandchildren.” Lord help anyone who took her up on that offer. You might as well plan to stay a while.

Granny’s church was the first one I ever set foot in. I still remember bible school there and altar call and the way my Granny sang (loudly) in the alto (tenorish) section of the choir.

Upon staying at Granny’s house for the first time after I was married I’ll never forget what she said to us over her shoulder as she padded off to bed, “I’ll just go take these hearing aids out and, Lord, I won’t hear a thing.” I swear there was a glimmer in her eye.

Every summer that we headed to Granny’s house we could always count on an inflatable pool in the backyard and a plastic set of cookware on the patio. Those non-negotiables made for countless hours of joy for two little girls.

There was an old iron glider set that sat on Granny’s porch for as long as I could remember. Now it sits on my back patio. And today I’m vowing to finally give it the TLC it deserves.

Granny’s house is where I first discovered lightning bugs. And boys. And attics. And what it feels like to have the wind knocked out of you. None of those things are related. All are sacred memories.

My Granny was like no other. She was sweet and kind, mischievous and childlike, loving and grateful, silly and spunky. To put it mildly, she was a character.

And man I’m gonna miss her.
