so much goodness.

I want to blog in depth about our time at my mom and stepdad’s place last weekend but I’m also a realist. It may not happen. Which means I just need to get some images up here so I’ll remember to, well, remember.

A couple of years ago my mom decided to stop fighting the holiday wars (you know the ones that involve children, stepchildren, grandchildren, new families and the tug o’ war of who will go where and when) and decided to carve out a random weekend every year to call the entire family together. No holiday. No reason. No traditions except for the ones we create for ourselves. The very, very best kind.

She chooses a weekend in September or October, just as Nashville sheds it’s stifling humidity in favor of gentle breezes and sunny skies. It’s a glorious 3 day respite from life. After the endless days of summer, before the holiday rush, it’s the perfect way to say hello to fall.

Of course, we’re a family like any other with personalities and lifestyles as varied as they come. Which naturally means a little touch of drama just to keep things interesting. But what would family life be without drama? Normal? Nah, I’ll pass. That stuff’s for the birds. 😉

(The man behind the putt-putt counter did the best he could with his shaky hands. Bless him.)

Sarah + Charlotte = inseparable. You’ll notice a theme.

Meet our Jack-O-Lanterns, from left to right, Cinderella, Sam, Uncle Jesse, and Rachel.

Sneaky McSneakerson #1 and Sneaky McSneakerson #2…

Ephraim LOVES my stepbrother Craig. This could very well stem from the trip we made to his firehouse two weeks ago for a visit and tour. He’s since been smitten. While at mom’s I overheard Sarah telling Charlotte that “Uncle Craig is a real firefighter and we got to go to his firefighter office!” Apparently Sarah thinks work = office.

There you have it – in no particular order – our family. Sticky smores, go-carts, flaming drinks and all.

That is such a wonderful idea having all of the family get together without it being for a holiday. It looks like you guys had a great time. What are those drinks? I love the glasses.

Love the photos, and love the concept — your mom is a very wise person!!! And, you know, I think that your Sarah and Karen Russell’s Annie have much the same sense of fashion, don’t you think? Thanks so much for sharing your memories of this wonderful weekend.
