the BIG girl in her big girl room

Two days more days until two. Man.

The finishing touches were put on Sarah’s big girl room last night so I grabbed my camera while we were playing this morning. I’m in love with how it turned out (toot! toot!)…it’s even better than the vision I had in my head. I kind of wish it was my room! Check out the photos and then I’ll get to the details…(because a lot of you have already asked)

Okay, for those of you who only know the internet-bloggin’ me, here’s something you may not know: I’m cheap. And I mean cheap as in I don’t own a single article of clothing that wasn’t purchased on sale (and we’re talking back of the store, clearance rack sale!). And not only am I cheap but I don’t mind advertising my cheapness. When someone compliments something in my home I have a hard time simply saying, “thank you”. Instead I usually blurt out something like, “Thank you. Ten bucks at Big Lots!”. I always wish I’d just keep my mouth shut and let them think it’s a priceless work of art but for some reason that would just steal the fun for me. I like everyone to know when a bargain has been found. So allow me a little fun, wouldya?

blue and pink quilt (my favorite part of the room): made by Brent’s maternal grandmother years and years ago = free

sleigh bed: hand-me down from our Colorado neighbors and then painted white = free

two matching bookshelves: purchased used 7 years ago when we got married and then painted white = free (okay, they were probably $200 dollars in 2000 but for this purpose I consider them free!)

play kitchen complete with refrigerator, sink, and stove/oven: Craig’s List, $30.00

pink step stool: Pier One Kids, clearance

pink lamp: Home Depot, clearance

Okay, I’ll stop. I could seriously go on and on about the bargains. It just makes me love all the pieces and parts that much more. I’m totally my mother’s daughter. For the record there are a few “splurges” in the room. Like the Land of Nod Chair. And the Pottery Barn Kids rug (ebay special). And technically the dresser and the nightstand are new but they’re from the unfinished furniture store so they still saved us some $$$. If you have anymore questions, just ask! I know the photos don’t show a ton of the room but now that it’s finished I won’t be so shy about taking photos in there so you’ll be sure to see more if you’re a regular reader.

Baby boy’s room is finished too but I’ll save that for another day (there are even more freebies in that room!).

And as a bonus for getting through my soapbox, here’s one more photo…

Sarah showing me where “Kiki” is on her shirt. For those who don’t know, Kiki is Caroline. The same Caroline who’s coming to visit us in 11 DAYS!!!

Woot woot! It’s hard to pass up a good bargain. Great job, girl! Super cute room… I wish mine were that pretty!

I’m cheap too. I just about popped my buttons the other day when someone asked where I got such a cute shirt. Clearance at WalMart, baby. I may be cheap, but I’m selective too. (I assure you the shirt was cute.) 😉

You got it from your mom, who got it from HER mom! (And also passed them on to Aunt Lu) Those Dixie Keith bargain genes run DEEP!! But hey, nothing wrong with a good bargain!! 😮

By the way, the room looks super cute!! Can’t wait to see baby boy’s room….

LeeAnnOctober 26, 2007 - 12:16 pm

I am also quite the bargain shopper! Be proud!!! LOL

meganOctober 26, 2007 - 12:25 pm

The room looks great! I’m jealous of your bargain buys. I am the person who loves the idea of a bargain, but I’m too lazy (or don’t have the time) to go find it.

SamanthaOctober 26, 2007 - 12:32 pm

Can’t wait to see Kiki and Sarah playing in the big girl room – just wish we were there for the big party this weekend! I love the curtains – did you make them?

erinOctober 26, 2007 - 12:52 pm

Girl, you know I did. 🙂

JodiOctober 26, 2007 - 12:59 pm

Do you have an IKEA near you? A bargain junkie’s dream store!

kathypOctober 26, 2007 - 1:15 pm

looks wonderful erin! i wish i had an eye for decorating like you do.

and just so you know, i’m a bargain shopper too! 🙂

kristinaOctober 26, 2007 - 1:23 pm

What a gorgeous room, Erin! Love it! Yay for being cheap! I am too and proud! 😉 P.S. What color of paint is that on the walls? I love it!

erinOctober 26, 2007 - 1:55 pm

Kristina, I wish I could help you out on the paint color. It’s what was in our house when we moved in and it’s in every room. I’ll look around and see if I can come across the name of it but it’s just a light khaki/tan color that goes with everything! Why fix what ain’t broken, right?

AmyOctober 26, 2007 - 2:09 pm

Love it! And thanks for sharing your bargains. . . I’m right there with you at the sale rack 🙂 The roman shades look great, btw!

Shana-LynnOctober 26, 2007 - 3:54 pm

whoo hooo for such awesome bargains!!

AnnaOctober 26, 2007 - 4:58 pm

it looks so perfect, Erin – i love it – maybe you should consider a little design side-biz, eh???

Stacey ROctober 26, 2007 - 8:11 pm

Oh man….I was going to ask the paint color as well but I see my question has already been answered. I love her room. Adorable!! Cute little girls deserve cute little rooms!!

TanyaOctober 27, 2007 - 2:39 pm

Adorable! I already have visions for my daughters big girl room in a few years.

I laughed so hard with your bit about telling people about your bargains. I was just saying the other day how I have the awful habit of telling everyone where I got something if they compliment me. Someone will say they like my shirt and I say – “Thanks! Marshalls – $14.99!” It is so annoying and I cringe when I think about it.

JaniceOctober 27, 2007 - 7:58 pm

What a perfect little girl’s room! It’s even better that you got a lot of great deals! That’s a lot of hard work looking for bargains and it’s well worth it! Looks like Sarah is enjoying her room, too!

May I ask if Sarah ever had a hard time transitioning to the toddler bed?

JaniceOctober 27, 2007 - 7:59 pm

Oops, I meant “Big Girl Bed”! 😛

erinOctober 28, 2007 - 5:42 am

Hey Janice! Sarah actually did really, really well with the transition. We moved her a couple of weeks after we moved to AL and she did fine. The first couple of weeks she tested us a bit but now it’s just second nature. Good luck!

MarciOctober 28, 2007 - 7:11 am

Beautiful big girl room! And I’m the same way with blurting out bargains…you feel so good when you got a great deal.

Hope Pigbear has a very happy birthday! We are gearing up for my daughter’s 2nd birthday next weekend.

LaurieOctober 28, 2007 - 1:00 pm

I always love looking at your blog and the big girl room is so adorable! It looks like a professional decorated it.

TashaOctober 28, 2007 - 8:50 pm

your taste is impeccable. I’m redoing Jada’s room and i’m having the hardest time finding a good deal on everything.

What a fantastic room! You’ve ton a terrific job in decorating. She looks so happy in there. You are EXACTLY like my neighbor in the bargain hunting. Too funny!
