true story.

Brent and I were married for five years before Sarah was born. And contrary to typical American family lore and legend we didn’t get very much ragging on the old “when are you gonna give us grandchildren” front.

But then Brent’s dad saw one of those Take Me Fishing commercials and all bets were off.

The next week the letter carrier dropped off a size 18-24 month hunter green t-shirt with a note attached, bearing Papa’s unmistakable scrawl. “Fill this up,” was all it said.

So we did.

(Have you met Brent’s dad? Telling him “no” is never an option.)

Five years later here we are.

They’ve got a ways to go (like, say, actual hooks on the end of their lines)…but it’s a start.

Since the hookless rods presented a problem Papa and Daddy snagged a fish for them to play with.

Which delighted B-ro to no end.

Papa kissed the little guy for good luck…

And then he scurried off back into the water…

living to be fished another day.

My husband and I have been married for almost 4 years, and we haven’t felt the need for children yet (even though 99.9% of our peers have had at least one if not multiple children by now). So, when I read that you were married for 5 years before you decided to have children, it did my heart some good. 🙂 I came across your work through Karen Russell (I took her class a year or so ago). You both are amazing! 🙂

So glad Karen Russell lead me to you! That was a great story! Fill this up! Ha! My favorite photo was the one of Grandma holding on to the shirt!

Oh, I feel like I know Papa just from your description & the photos–love the overalls! (Especially love the note attached–“fill this up.” HA!) Grandparents are the greatest!!!

After Ben and I got married. EVERY time we saw his dad he kept on asking when we were going to have kids. Trust me, be thankful they didn’t bug you. 😉

When Jeremiah and I got married, Jeremiah’s grandfather told me that he would make me a gorgeous cradle and wagon if I would fill it. Our first “married” Christmas those were under the tree for us. But no pressure-haa!

Maybe the fish will bring back more family members since it got the good luck kiss right? My father-in-law thought it would be cute if he gave money to buddha for a grandbaby. My dad thought it was a good idea too so every time we visited a temple, money would be given to buddha when we were in Vietnam. No pressure indeed.

We were married 6 years before we had our first and then waited 5 years before our second was born. But I do have to say we always say what a wonderful mom and photographer you are and how fun you seem to be that we forget to give credit to Brent for being what seems like a fun great dad. My father was always busy working so it was always mom around. I try for my husband and I to equally be around with the kids during fun times and bad times and sick times. So kudos to Brent who can go to work and still have the energy to play and do fun stuff with you and the kids. Love the fishing photos I will have to try that with our son I think he will love it, not sure about our daughter, LOL.

What GREAT memories!! Love the images! What lens(es) did you use for these? I always struggle with what primes or zoom to take with me for stuff like this.

Precious. I can’t wait until Grayson (our almost 9 month old) can go fishing with no hooks! Looks like they had a fun time….even without the hooks! Great pictures! I absolutely love your site! I added your site to “my favorite sites” on our website!

Do you know how I avoid duplicate iCal alerts? (Apple support does not, so far…) I think b/c of iCloud calendar sharing concerning my husband and that i, I am getting two alerts for every event on the iMac and on the iPhone. every thing is up to date and i possess a new MacBook Pro and the new iPhone 4s.
