girls rule.

We have a saying in this family. Actually, it’s more like a mantra. And it goes a little something like this:

Girls rule. Boys drool.

The male Cobbs would claim I’ve inverted the verbs but, whatever. They drool so they don’t really know what they’re talking about.

We use the mantra to taunt one another for a variety of reasons but most often in conjuction with a race. We are, to put it mildly, a competitive lot. And we’ll race anytime, anyplace. Usually it involves a last minute, sneakily planned mad-dash through a parking lot and toward our parked car. Although we’ve also been known to kick our bikes into high gear as we turn the last corner of a family bike ride. Or with wagon-pulled children in tow, hands gripping the sides for dear life.

And the best races always end with our jubilant battle cry, “Girls rule! Boys drool!”

Such was the case last Saturday when we struck out for a midday hike.

The hike started at a leisurely pace, with the load of children being shared between the four adults (we were joined by my cousin Lori and our friend Joe – a member of the Ohio youth group we advised back in 2001-2003).

A seasoned competitor knows to start at a steady but unhurried pace. Your rival must never know how badly you want to win or that you have the finish line in mind before the race has even started.

It’s just bad form.

So we all made like frenemies and trotted along, chatting and laughing.

Stopping occasionally to let the natives run free…

and, of course, to take turns with the backpack carrier…

If you’re wondering why you’ve yet to see a member of the “Girls Rule!” team with the backpack carrier, just know that it’s all part of our conserve-energy-at-all-cost strategy. That Pi’bears was totally in on it.

You don’t think she actually needed to be carried in that thing, do you?

Heck no. The only think she needed to do was tire out the boys, paving the way for our last 1/4 mile victory dash.

(But don’t let me spoil the ending for you.)

Along the way we made time to stop and blow the dandelions…

get a few tickles in…

And even grab a self-timed group shot (a team photo if you will)…

The boys tried to show off a little along the way,

But their pride only worked to advance the girls’ maniacal master plan…

hatched by this tiny but shrewd little girl. (I’ve never  been more proud)

With the end of the trail in sight Sarah turned on the heat shouting, “Run girls! RUN!”

And we did.

And those boys? They never knew what hit ’em.

Until, of course, they arrive back at the truck where the girls were already perched, sunbathing,

and shouting, “GIRLS RULE! BOYS DROOL!”

(and they do.)

Ha, ha, I love it! Right down to that mischievous little grin Sarah is sporting in the running photo! She and my little Denae would hit it off well!

Girls after my own heart! You get extra points for hauling the big camera along. . . that thing is not a light-weight!

Um… Adorable!

Erin, you just crack me up. Every time. Unless you’re not meaning to, of course. 🙂 Curious about when you’re going to write a book of some sorts? Like the kind you sell and make money on. Not the kind you “blurb” at the end of the year. Though I would buy that one too. Hope that doesn’t sound too weird.

Thanks you guys! This was a fun one to write. =)

Debbie, thank you for your kind words. I don’t think a book is in the works for me although I have an idea that I’d love to write on. I don’t know any of the right people though and am too lazy to look!

Years ago I taught my 3 yr old niece the following:
ME: “you know everything, don’t you?”
HER: “yeah. ‘Cause I a girl!”
(she actually said grill, but that made it even better!)

Girls Rule!

new reader to your blog. All the photos are just fabulous, but I love the one at the end where you can also see her in the back of the mirror, I don’t know if that was intentional, but its a really neat touch. Would you mind sharing what camera/lens you carried on the hike?

DaddyApril 25, 2010 - 7:13 pm

Really? So tonight, when you and Sarah had a car, while Ephraim and I were on foot, yet we still beat you down the street back to our house–where is the post about that? Or are you too busy drooling?

Love when the Cobb’s get their hike on! Lucas is melting over that little Sarah Cobb…who probably isn’t so little when compared to my sweet LITTLE boy. 🙂 See you soon!

Those two pictures of your girl in the woods with the path behind her are two of the most magical shots I’ve seen in a long time…especially the first one. There is something about it…gorgeous!
