ten on tuesday.

1. Sorry I’ve been a ToT slacker. It’s been one of my favorite things about blogging lately but it takes a bunch of time to actually think of the things. And time + thinking hasn’t been something I’ve had much of lately! Mainly the thinking part.;)

2. Does anyone know a trick for getting rid of ladybugs? They’ve infested Sarah’s room and it’s keeping her from staying in there for nap/rest time. And I need nap/rest time. Who would have thought that ladybugs would be my undoing?

3. Did you know that my business blog gets about half the hits per day that this blog does? I don’t think most of my clients even know I exist over here on The Pigbear. I like keeping my blogs separate so that I can be Mommy Me over here and Photographer Me over there but I’m not opposed to having the two worlds mingle every now and again. I’m thinking of inviting those client visitors over here. Maybe a link in the sidebar. What do you guys think? For that matter, I guess I should add a sidebar link from here to there.

4.  Sarah went through a really rough patch of sleep in the last month. She was waking up at least once per night and having lots of trouble going back to sleep. And actually going to bed was a huge problem in and of itself. We weren’t at all sure what to do about the middle of the night wakings so we tackled going to bed first by instituting “I’ll check on you in ten minutes.” Now each night when we tuck her in we remind her that we’ll be back in ten minutes for a hug and a snuggle and would you believe that works? About half the time we don’t even have to go back in because she’s already out. And I don’t think we’ve had a night yet when we’ve had to go in twice. I think that knowing we’re coming back to check on her gives her the comfort and peace she needs to fall asleep. And her nightime waking has ended too which I’m sure has to do with falling to sleep easily in the evening. Hallelujah! Now we’ll just settle in until the next round of sleep wars because as parents do they ever really end?

5. Now that I’ve written all that about those happy, joyful words about our night time sleep success I’m here to report that that Pi’bears has successfully woken her brother up from his nap with her screaming and crying over the ladybugs and I’m about to be at my wit’s end with her. Ah sleep wars, as parents do they ever really end?

6. I don’t usually post pictures in ToT but right now I need a calming influence. And this is it.

7. Those toes belong to the sweet little newborn I got to photograph last week in Virginia – my friend Liz’s new baby boy! Ephraim flew with me for the overnight trip and, miracle of miracles, we scored an empty seat for him on all four flights. Ephraim was thrilled to be on the trip with me — he’s a big fan of babies. Not surprisingly he was pretty enamored by Toby, or “Potey” as he preferred to call him.

8. While I was in VA visiting Liz (and Potey!) we had a long discussion about what makes blogs so interesting and what kinds of blogs we’re drawn to. Liz isn’t a huge blog person althought I admittedly am. I find that I gravitate toward blogs of people who have a defined style (artistically or just in life), seem to be happy with who they are, tell their story well whether with words or pictures, and are introspective and generous in spirit. I also find that I’m more interested in the blogs of people that I don’t know rather than people that I know. I love my friends’ blogs but there’s just a level of mystery and imagination involved in reading the story of someone unknown to me that I think is fascinating. Kind of like a novel. What about you? What kind of blogs do you find yourself reading? Any favorites I should know about? If I had to name my top three (this week) I’d give you: Tara Whitney (no surprise there!), Lyndsay Stradtner (we’ll put my theory to the test when I meet Lyndsay next year…we’ll see if she’s as interesting as I think she is…I have a feeling I won’t be disappointed!), and Nora Griffin (there’s something about her zest for life I just love).

9. Will all the mamas out there throw things at me if I confess that I actually like the time change? I think it’s just because I’m a change junkie. I like when things get mixed up a bit (a holdover from my military childhood I think) and fall back does that for me. Bright mornings, dark evenings, new routines…it’s fun!

10. So far I’m happy to report that my new 5d and I are getting along gloriously. I hope to have pictures to prove it soon.

I’m running out the door so no time to really respond, but I too love Lyndsay’s blog and I guess I am a complete nerd because I’m super excited to hear that the two of you are meeting up! How fun. I too love following blogs of those I don’t know (because in fact, no one I know in real life has a blog they share) and yours and Lyndsay’s are two of my favorites!

I wish I could tell you that the sleep wars stop. Mazie still gives us trouble from time to time. Neither of the other two do but Mazie has always been our tester. She will wake up in the middle of the night screaming and terrified. She has been good lately but when she gets into a mood we have to crack the door and tell her we will close it in a little while. She usually is asleep by the time we decide to close it. Our taekwondo master has told Mazie that she is the only one who can change her thoughts. If she is scared of something, she needs to change what she is thinking. No one else can do it.

I wanna know how you and Lyndsay get to meet, and if I’m invited ;-)

I don’t link personal and business… I like for my clients to think I have my act together, I don’t want them to know I have parenting woes. Lyndsay connects personal and business seamlessly, if my life was that interesting maybe I would start.

JenniferNovember 3, 2009 - 4:12 pm

Ladybugs? That’s the craziest thing I’ve ever heard of! How in the world do they all get in there and why just her room? Maybe if you bring tree branches or something botanical in there they’ll go to it and you can take them outside. Your blog is pretty much the only one I read, and I generally always hop over to the business blog while I’m here. POTD was always my fav thing but you’ve been very sporadic!! :(

I KNEW those were Tobe’s Toes the second I saw them – way to go, Erin! Okay, dinner calls, but YAY, I’m glad to hear that you got seats on the way back, too :) Miss you guys TONS!

There is a non lethal way to get rid of ladybugs and that’s to vacuum them up and then release them quickly because they will climb out of the machine, or spray them with lemon scented apparently they don’t like that scent. Maybe keep Sarah’s windows closed for now. Some ladybugs do bite not hard but to a little girl it may hurt. My 6 year old is scared of any crawling type bug so I feel your pain. Hope that helps. Love your blog and I wouldn’t mix personal with business just because personal is all about your family and if you ever want to print it’s about them only and not work related, my opinion anyways. Wish I knew how to start a blog for my two little ones.

Oh forgot to mention a favorite blog I follow besides the Pig Bear’s of course. I also love Simplicity Photography by Angela Monson she does a lot of Urban photos with kids, very cool.

Or should I say Potey’s Toes :)
I like the time change, too – both in spring AND fall – for the same reason!

Sleep wars tend to be a yo-yo in our house so far. They go down and come right back up again. Sporadic and very random. It’s funny you mentioned your NEED for naptime. I second that!!! Both boys boycotted naps today and I was not a happy camper!! No me time. It’s funny how you grow to adore that little quiet part of the day. Hopefully, tomorrow goes better! Good to know I’m not the only one…

With that said, I love eclectic mommy blogs. (Like yours!) I think they’re empowering for women. Just seeing other moms who shuffle and juggle just as I do. It encourages me to be creative and give me an extra nudge when I need it too. Your blog is a favorite of mine. Here, I feel like I get an honest, witty account of a loving, educated, talented mom! Thanks for my daily dose. (p.s. I share the same fascination with “stranger” blogs vs. known)

1st — swoon! Toby’s toes are so adorable and I can’t wait for more!
2nd — sleep woes. . . ah, we’ve got them. 2 year old no longer sleeping during naptime (thank goodness he still stays in his room!). 5 month old just doesn’t nap.
3rd–how do you find time to follow more blogs? I can barely keep up with all of you long distance friends, let alone follow someone I don’t even know. And I know you have tons and tons and tons to do! :-)

MichelleNovember 4, 2009 - 6:24 am

I sincerely mean this when I say you are one of my favorite bloggers. I love blogs of photographers who take amazing pics and let you in on their families. You are probably my number 1! I also follow Lyndsay religiously too for the same reasons.

Ladybugs are Huntsville’s dirty little secret…I’ve never seen them anywhere in my life like we get them here, and it just seems to affect certain parts of your house (I suspect something to do with directionality – is that a word? – and exposure). For examply, when my parents lived here, their entire south facing wall, upstairs and down would have ladybugs coming in by the masses. It did run my mother absolutely CRAZY! and her only solution after much research and pestering (get it?) of the bug man was to keep the dustbuster nearby and collect them at least daily (she didn’t care much if they survived or not, I’m pretty sure). But my house faces generally south as well, as we don’t have nearly as big a problem with ladybugs (knock on wood), just don’t get me started on the ants… – so I attributed it to the fact that their house was on a hill and very exposed where mine is more in a valley and has more tree coverage. Hmph. Out of curiosity, are they coming in the area of Sarah’s front (west facing) window or the side/south one?
On another note – I miss your header that let me click over to your business blog, photo-a-day, archives, etc. so easily. I don’t know if you really want to send business folks this way, but those of us that read your personal blog are probably also into clicking over to the business one fairly often.
So there, my way too long two cents worth :)

jessica leighNovember 4, 2009 - 12:23 pm

StaceyNovember 4, 2009 - 3:34 pm

I love your blog and I also love Lyndsay’s. I read others, but when yours pops up on google reader, I’m drawn to you first. In fact, because we don’t know each other, but I feel like I know you, I’m convinced if I lived near you, we’d be great friends. That sounds crazy and I promise you I am not. I’m a normal mom like you that loves my kids and tries to make their childhood happy and memorable . . .just like you! See, we’d be friends! :) Plus what I wouldn’t give for you to photograph my 3 kids!! Ahhhh!

beccaNovember 4, 2009 - 6:49 pm

I’ll have to go check out those blogs. I don’t always like the time change but this year was different and instead of depressing me I’ve felt rejuvinated and even had more energy the last couple of days. Weird!

jodieNovember 4, 2009 - 8:55 pm

Got here from my friend Lyndsay, whom I met for the first (and only) time when we were both vacationing in Florida this summer and traded photo sessions on the beach! She IS as amazing in real life as she is on her blog and I am blessed to call her a FRIEND! :)

I too am a HUGE blog junkie. It’s a great distraction for me! Edit two, read one, email a client, read a blog, edit another pic, check my Reader! HA! Maybe if I didn’t follow so many i would get more done? :)

SherrylNovember 5, 2009 - 4:21 pm

Oh my gosh! We too had a ladybug infestation a couple of weeks ago. I called Terminix but they don’t deal with ladybugs. So I am very sorry to report that the only thing left to do was vacuum them up! I felt terrible because they are such gentle bugs but when there’s hundreds of them trying to get in… Oh well….
