this is what unions are for.

I mean, seriously, these working conditions are deplorable.

Sarah’s love of all things colored and painted and snipped within an inch of it’s previous life as paper is encroaching upon my work space in a MAJOR way. It seems my elbows are permanently sticky from tape and glue and the like while many of my important client documents have gotten dangerously close to becoming scrap paper for the little artistic monster. Not to mention “my” space has now been condensed to a stretch of graite no larger than my keyboard. I think I’m going to need to start typing with my elbows in the air. Carpel tunnel is surely right around the corner.

What’s a work-at-home mommy to do? Any others out there who might like to unionize with me for the sole purpose of imploring our greedy, grabby, grubby children for more days off, better pay and a LESS HAZARDOUS WORK ENVIRONMENT?

I’m in. Do I pay my union dues to you? I could use some more days off and a cleaner environment too

We have a friend who bought a rubber office floor mat and cut it into strips and attached it on the counter upside down so the rubber pokey things are up front of the cumputer so it’s pokey “kinda” not a lot but enought to keep his kids off the computer stuff!!

I also vote for getting Sarah her own desk. Maybe it’s time to re-arrange her room a bit and see what kind of work space can be created?

Kristin, what a fabulous idea!

I’d really like for Sarah and Ephraim to each have their own workspace but there are a couple of issues. First, Sarah complains of being lonely if she’s ever coloring/writing on her own. She’s so used to being right next to me that she doesn’t like to do it on her own! Second, SPACE! Seriously, I don’t know where we’d put a table in their rooms. I need to look into the possibility though. Especially as Ephraim gets increasingly interested in being up here with us too. I can’t handle THREE of us workin on this little stretch of counter!

This is what my space looked like til we got our new mac, no way my babies were touching the new baby. We got a computer desk at a yard sale, gave them the old computer and now they sit about 6 feet away with their own space. It ain’t pretty, but it works fabulously well. Another new rule- no food or drink near the mac. Now my workspace is a mess, but it’s all my mess. Wonderful.

I’m not sure how your space is set up but don’t you have a little half wall nearby? Maybe you could do a little drop down table that would fold up flush with the wall when not in use??

That’s really a great idea Lyndsay! The problem is that little half wall is right in front of our side door so we can’t put anything there. =(

I’m not a SAHM, but I work 4 days a week and have 3 children. They too encroach in my space… the little monsters 🙂
My daughter does have her own desk in her room, but she still likes to “work” in my area with me. I try to set up a little table for her when she really wants to be near. Other than that, they just know that my desk is not open to their fingers unless they have asked. And if they don’t…. well, it isn’t pretty.

By the way, the food near your computer totally freaks me out. You must be extremely patient.

Karen, ME patient? NO WAY! =) That’s actually my lunch…and the kiddos were at school! I snapped the shot right before I sat down to eat and try to work around the clutter. I would never in a million years dream of letting those walking messes eat by my computer!
