It’s been quite a while since I’ve photographed a newborn that was quite as awake and alert as this little doll. She was 13 days old and I tell you, there’s something magic about that two week mark. The older they get the harder it is for them sleep through all of my shannigans! I love capturing sweet, sleepy newborns for two reasons. First, because it’s what they do most of the time in real life so it’s worth capturing (they certainly won’t rack like that again until they’re teenagers…and then they’re not quite as cute!). And the second reason is because sometimes newborns can be, well, funny looking when they’re awake! I mean, what new mama hasn’t stared at their new babe and said, “oh no honey, don’t make that face!”. Adorable, yes? Wall portrait worthy…not so much!
Well, this little dear is the exception to that rule. I couldn’t believe what sweet little expressions she had for the camera already!

Can you believe that pose? I know! And then I love how she’s greeting the world in this one.

Despite her photographic perfection while awake, I did still want to get her to sleep. I had to bring out the big guns though…the rain machine, the heating bad, the background music, the swaddling, AND the fast rocking. And finally…

Yes, that’s more like it.

She did rouse here and there for a few stretches…

Before she was out again…

And another score with my new favorite siblings shot…

Man I love newborn babies. Love. them.
